The deadliest day for Jews since the holocaust- also known as October 7th, 2023. That day, Hamas, a terrorist organization and Palestinian Militant group, launched a coordinated attack against Israel, killing nearly 1200 people, over 40 Americans, and kidnapping hundreds of civilians.
In this edition of The Paw, we take time and dedicate our coverage to honoring and remembering the victims of that horrible day, and their families. The decision to release this special edition, a first of its kind, was not made lightly. As we are a publication affiliated with Denver Jewish Day School, we uphold our commitment to Zionism, Jewish Unity, and Tikun Olam (repairing the word). The attacks of October 7th, no doubt, left a mark on our hearts and on our minds. By dedicating this Issue to the anniversary, we aim to ensure that the memory of all those affected remains alive.
It is evident that the perpetrators of this violence sought to instill fear in division. This anniversary should serve as a reminder of unity and solidarity in the Jewish community when in crisis. Let us not forget, “All Jews are responsible for each other,” (Shavuot 39a). We have a communal obligation to look out for one another and to support one another. Hamas’ attacks were not only an assault on those directly affected, but also on the whole Jewish community and all the values we stand for: peace, tolerance, and kindness.
As a school newspaper, we hold a large and important job informing the school body. But our role extends beyond reporting the news and relaying our opinion. Our job is to provide a space for reflection and communal dialogue. We hope that this edition can give that to you. May we collectively honor the memory of those lost and pray for a future of peace and prosperity.
The Paw stands with Israel and all those who strive for a better, peaceful, kinder world. Am Yisrael Chai.
